Interviews are nerve-racking. No matter how many times you have gone through it, the thought of being interviewed can still make you feel nervous. But with the right preparation you can make a great impression on potential employers.

Here are some important do's and don'ts to keep in mind which will help you ace your next interview.

Things to do beforehand (Do's)

  • Knowing about yourself to the fullest might help. You should know what are your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Knowing how to overcome your nervousness. It may be simple things like listening to music or playing a game or by simply talking to other candidates
  • Know the format of the interview and ask the hiring manager beforehand, so that you can prepare
  • Find out about possible questions that might appear as well as possible answers
  • Make sure that you understand how to explain or describe every single point inside your resume
  • Research the company's history, mission and recent developments
  • Prepare some questions related to the job position or the company
  • Get plenty of sleep the night before to ensure you are alert and focused

Things to during interview (Do's)

  • Dress appropriately for the interview, no matter if it is a face-to-face or an online interview
  • Arrive early at least 10 minutes prior to the interview start time
  • Don't be too casual and don't be too stiff
  • Minimalize your movement
  • Listen and remember the interviewer's name and the correct pronunciation
  • Do not look away while answering the question
  • Do not take too long when answering a certain question
  • Ask for clarification if you don't understand a question
  • Explain how you can be an asset to the company
  • Speak confidently about all your relevant achievements and skills
  • Do ask relevant questions about the company or job position

 Things to avoid during interview (Don'ts)

  • Don't make negative comments about your previous employers or managers
  • Don't give the impression that you are only interested for the job position because of the salary or the location
  • Don't provide false information in your resume to impress the interviewer as it will negatively affect your chances if you are not able to answer related questions
  • Don't forget to research the company as it is a big red flag for hiring managers if you don't know anything about the company
  • Don't be late for the interview as it leaves a bad first impression and also disrupts the interview schedule for other candidates
  • Don't try to memorize your answers to the  interview questions, instead remember the key points which you want to include in your answers
  • Don't provide unnecessary details or long explanations. Always try to provide concise answers that relate to the job position and the hiring company
  • Don't forget to listen and focus on the information provided by the interviewer and use this information to structure your answers accordingly
  • Don't ask about your salary until the interviewer asks your salary expectations. You can provide a salary range which is comfortable for you
